IB program (IBMYP)
- Centennial Academy adopted the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Middle Years Program (IBMYP) in 2004
- IBMYP provides Centennial with world-class training and curriculum development tools to build a curriculum that meets IBMYP standards.
- Centennial Academy is one of the few schools in North America to offer the IBMYP designation to all of its students and not as an elite stream
- For students aged 11 to 16, the IBMYP enriches the Québec curriculum.
- The program:
- Encourages international-mindedness, starting with a foundation in the students' own languages and cultures
- Reflects real life by providing students with the opportunity to see the connections among subjects and how they connect with world issues
- Emphasizes the development of the whole student - physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically, through the Learner Profile
- IBMYP maintains that collaborative planning, mapped curriculum, and learning is best structured around five areas of interaction over five years:
- Approaches to Learning: Develops the intellectual discipline, attitudes, strategies, and skills that will result in critical, coherent and independent thought and the capacity for problem-solving and decision-making
- Health and Social Education: Prepares students for a physically and mentally healthy lifestyle, aware of potential hazards and able to make informed choices. It develops in students a sense of responsibility for their own well-being and for the physical and social environment.
- Community and Service: Emphasizes the development of community awareness and concern, a sense of responsibility, and the skills and attitudes needed to make an effective contribution to society.
- Environments: Aims to make students aware of their inter-dependence with the environment so that they become conscious of their responsibility and may take positive action for maintaining an environment fit for the future.
- Human Ingenuity: Puts the focus on the evolution, processes and products of human creativity and their impact on society and the mind. Students learn to appreciate the human capacity to influence, transform, enjoy and improve the quality of life. This area of interaction encourages students to explore the relationships between science, aesthetics, technology and ethics.
- Since adopting IBMYP standards of excellence, we have devoted significant resources to training teachers in such strategies as concept attainment, rubric design, and assessment for learning.
